The Island of Noirmoutier presents itself in many ways - through the mimosas that flower in January, the windmills that bear witness to the importance of milling in times gone by and the salt marshes with traditionally harvested salt (fleur de sel) that smells of violets.  It is an island where people can search for shellfish and one that has been the inspiration for so many artists, such as Auguste Renoir, Claude Sautet and Agnès Varda, who recognised the singular and surprising nature of this fascinating place.
